In 1986/87 Mercedes Benz asked Andy Warhol for a series of images ("Cars") to commemorate the automobile's one hundredth birthday. From 80 planned images based on 20 chosen Mercedes types which were to tell the story of the car from the Daimler engine driven carriage and the Benz patent engine driven car from 1886 all the way to the present day, in the end 35 images and 20 large scale drawings depicting 8 different models were produced.
